It’s the time of the year when most people reflect on the year that was and resolve to make positive changes for the New Year that’s come. Among all the resolutions that people make, the underlying premise is always the same: to be happier, healthier and more productive. Here at The Specialists, we believe that happiness starts at home.          The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment – Marie Kondo We’ve put together some simple cleaning habits to add to your routine for a more organised and stress-free life.
  1. De-clutter your space
If you missed our article on 8 Clutter Cutting Ideas to End the Year Right, then chances are you haven’t gotten around to your post-holiday purge. The New Year is a great time to get rid of some of the accumulated stuff taking up space in your home – from your closet to the fridge.
  1. Organise your schedule
Does your life seem like a mad dash from one task to another, leaving a trail of chaos in your wake? Making daily routines that you can stick to is the secret to keeping a tidy and more organised house without feeling like it takes a lot of effort.
  1. Stock up responsibly
When choosing your cleaning products, instead of grabbing the first or cheapest item on the shelf, consider whether that product is cleaning for health or just for appearance. It may shine your furniture and mask odours, but does it get rid of bacteria and germs the way it should. This year, be more aware of the toxins and chemicals in your cleaning products, but also how effective they are at actually cleaning your home.

  1. Get around to it
By ‘it’ – we mean the items of your home that often go the whole year unnoticed and uncleaned.  Inside and under the oven, curtains and pelmets, ceiling fans and light fixtures, and yes, your cleaning supplies. READ: 10 Things in Your Home & How Often They Should be Cleaned
  1. Clean as you go
Instead of leaving crumbs and spills to sit until the next cleaning run, take the time to clean it up or wipe it down immediately. Since spills and crumbs are easier to clean up when fresh it actually saves you time, rather than trying to fight with dried on gunk later.
  1. Make time for the ‘Big Clean’
While your daily or weekly cleaning routine may be enough to remove the dirt that lies on the surface layer of your furniture and carpets, dirt and debris can work its way down into the fibres that only a deep clean can remove. Set aside a day or two every now and then to get your house scrubbed from top to bottom – you’ll find that it’s easier to keep your home clean in between.
  1. Understand common pollutants
There are many allergens, bacteria and other toxins hiding in your home. Some more obvious than others. From mould and pollen, to dust mites and pet dander, knowing how to spot, treat and prevent them is the first step to a healthier home.
  1. Don’t just flip it, clean it

Everyone knows that rotating your mattress at least once a year will help maintain its form and extend its lifespan. In addition to flipping, it’s also recommended that you get your mattress cleaned every six months to remove dirt, dust mites and other contaminants.
  1. Organise your office
Research has proven that a decrease in productivity is linked to excessive clutter and disorder. Make it a habit this year of keeping your office space organised and clutter free by throwing out unnecessary items and cleaning your desk at the end of each day.
  1. Make it safe and sound
The safety of your family is your highest priority, but do you know the risks your home may be concealing? Do a thorough inspection of your home to make sure you’re not living with a potential health hazard or fire risk.
