One or two flies here and there might seem harmless, but how do you know those two won’t turn into hundreds in a few days’ time? The warmer summer months are prime time for to start breeding and infesting homes and businesses, but a lot of the time fly infestations just seem to come out of nowhere seemingly overnight. We’ve got a few tips for spotting some of the signs that you’re in for a fly problem.

Maggots

Finding maggots (which are flies in their larval stage) in or around your bins or other deteriorating matter could indicate a potential breeding site. Flies breed rapidly, laying up to 900 eggs at a time, and hatch within 48 hours depending on the temperature and environmental conditions.

Smell

Notice a particularly foul odour in the air? Check for dead rodents in heater vents, in your roof space or any other concealed space. If you can smell it, chances are a fly has already found its way to it and set up a nice little nesting site.

Heat Waves

The fly lifecycle can actually speed up as temperatures rise, enabling them to reach adulthood quicker. Increased sightings after particularly hot and humid weather could be a sure sign that flies are breeding in or near your property.

Dark Clusters

Small dark clusters of spots the size of a pinhead I light fittings, upper areas of the room and wall surfaces as well as near drains and mulch piles could actually be clusters of young flies waiting to reach adulthood.

How to get rid of flies?

It’s best to catch the problem early, before things get out of hand and you have a full-blown infestation on your hands. Instead of just killing the flies you see, the best course of action is to identify the source, or the breeding site, otherwise they’ll just keep coming back.
