ant species

Ants are an irritant when they invade your home or office. While the most common ant, the Garden Ant, is often the culprit of infestations, there many species that are found in Southern Africa.

Argentine Ants

Argentine ants could become a large threat, as the colony size can be monumental, sometimes covering entire habitats.

Unlike other ant species, the Argentine ant queen also forages for her own food. A musty odour characterises the ant when crushed. These ants can grow up to 1.5 mm long, whereas the queen can grow up to 6 mm long.

Caribbean Crazy Ants

These unique ants derive their name from scurrying around erratically when searching for food.

Carpenter Ants

This ant species derives its name from excavating wood in structures in order to build nests , resulting

in smooth tunnels running inside the wooden structure. Worker ants grow up to 6 mm in size, while the queens grow up to 19 mm.

Odorous House Ants

This obvious name comes from the strong odour that the ants excrete when crushed. The smell is similar to rotting coconut.

Their sizes range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm long.

Pavement Ants

Pavement ants derive their name from nesting underneath pavements or in cracks in the pavement. They can also inhabit structures.

Red Imported Fire Ants

These ants make their nests in soil while building mound nests. They are commonly found in garages.

Ant Control

Whilst a wide range of DIY and off-the-shelf products are available to get rid of ants, a large infestation may require professional pest control to ensure the problem won’t reoccur.
